Announcement from our CEO

Special announcement from Jacek, our co-founder and CEO:

"Announcing a change at Quesma: after 1.5 years of collaboration, my co-founder and CPO, Paweł, and I have decided to part ways as co-founders. Our journey began at Sumo Logic, where we shared a vision to make a meaningful impact in the data industry. After leaving Sumo, I began brainstorming ideas for a new venture and invited Paweł to join me in building Quesma. Together, we secured venture funding, built a dedicated team, and signed our first commercial deal. However, after much reflection, we agreed that parting ways was the right decision.

As of January 2025, Paweł will no longer be with the company in an operational role. I’m pleased to share that he will remain an advisor to Quesma, and I look forward to continuing our insightful discussions about the future of databases. I am deeply grateful for Paweł’s contributions to Quesma and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

This decision does not change our mission or plans at Quesma: to simplify how applications interact with databases and enable organizations to evolve their data architecture seamlessly. We’re building a database gateway that helps development teams modernize their infrastructure and adapt to new challenges without unnecessary complexity. Personally, I’ve never been more excited about what we’re building than I am right now.

With partnerships like Hydrolix, ClickHouse, and major players in the telecommunications and streaming industries, the team at Quesma continues to deliver value to our partners and customers. By providing the right tools, we aim to help companies move quickly, innovate effectively, and fully realize the potential of their data. This vision continues to drive us forward with determination and clarity. If you’re interested in learning more, feel free to reach out!"

Community updates

  • Our CEO, Jacek, delivered a talk on Observability Query Languages to an audience of over 100 attendees. This was a dry run for our upcoming presentation at KubeCon in London this April—hope to see you there!

Interesting reads

  • Our founding engineer, Przemysław Hejman, wrote a guest post for Hydrolix’s blog, pulling back the curtain on how it all works. If you’re into databases, tech magic, or just enjoy knowing how the sausage is made, this one’s for you.

Updates from the database industry

  • Consolidation in the data ecosystem continues. Recent strategic acquisitions highlight the ongoing trend of consolidation in the data industry. dbt Labs’ acquisition of SDF Labs, announced on January 14, 2025, aims to enhance the dbt developer experience by integrating advanced SQL comprehension capabilities. Similarly, Confluent’s acquisition of WarpStream in September 2024 expands its data streaming offerings, particularly in Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC) architectures. These moves reflect a broader industry pattern where companies are consolidating to strengthen their technological capabilities and market positions.

  • Turso embarks on an ambitious rewrite. In December 2024, Turso announced “Limbo”, a project to reimplement SQLite in Rust. This is a statement in support of open-contribution values. The rewrite incorporates deterministic testing, powered by Antithesis, which specializes in simulating hardware and software failures to enhance reliability. The initiative also seeks full compatibility with SQLite while leveraging Rust’s memory safety and modern architecture. The project has garnered significant community interest—8.8k stars on GitHub in a month!

  • 2024 retrospective: Key database industry shifts. Carnegie Mellon’s annual review, published on January 1, 2025, highlights significant trends from 2024, including major license changes by companies like Redis Ltd. and Elastic N.V. to protect against cloud vendors. The retrospective also discusses the rise of open-source forks and the impact of these changes on the database ecosystem.
